Excel courses

In order to gain the most benefit from the Excel courses we recommend that you complete them in the following order:-

1. Fundamentals (classroom course)
2. Manipulating Data (classroom course)
3. Calculating Data (classroom course)

Excel for Research Part 1 – Fundamentals

A 5-hour hands-on course led by a tutor, designed to give participants the opportunity to gain a fuller understanding of the capabilities of Excel; producing a variety of worksheets, working with data and charts.

Prerequisites – Participants should be familiar with the Excel interface (Ribbon, Quick Access Toolbar, Formula bar etc.) and possess a basic knowledge of Excel.

Content – find & replace data ; keep column and row titles visible ; hide/unhide worksheet data ; include information that prints at the top/bottom of every printed page ; AutoSum & Statistical Functions ;create formulas ; create and modify different types of chart ; sort data; extract subsets of data using criteria

Excel for Research Part 2 – Manipulating Data

This 5-hour course is hands-on with a tutor leading you through each of the  processes. Practice exercises and tasks are included in the session to  help you master the manipulation features of Excel. Participants are  encouraged to bring their own files to the session in order to practise  the techniques on relevant data.

Prerequisites – This course is designed for participants who have attended the Fundamentals course or have commensurate knowledge through experience.

Content – Highlight cells automatically that meet certain criteria ; summarise data using subtotals and relative range naming ; use advanced filters to analyse data in a list ; group cells and use outlines to manipulate the worksheet ; remove duplicate data ; consolidate data across multiple worksheets  ; create scenarios using the What-If Analysis Tools ; create, modify and work with PivotTables to analyse and  manipulate large sets of data

Excel for Research Part 3 – Calculating Data

This 5-hour course is hands-on with a tutor leading you through each of the  processes. It will teach you to create calculations within Excel. Practice exercises and tasks are included in the session to  help you master the manipulation features of Excel. Participants are  encouraged to bring their own files to the session in order to practise  the techniques on relevant data.

Prerequisites – This course is designed for participants who have attended the “Manipulating Data” course or have commensurate knowledge through experience.

Content – use multiple worksheets at the same time; use a range of date functions (e.g. calculate Age) ; use a range of logical functions (e.g. IF function ) ;use the statistical functions (e.g. count cells that  meet a condition or calculate the frequency) ; use the  Lookup functions (e.g to match data) ; use a range of text functions (e.g. to tidy data); access further statistical analysis tool by installing the toolpak
