Win funding to organise an event or training that develops transferable skills
Proposals are invited from Postdoctoral/Early Career Research Staff/ Early Career Teaching Staff from the Faculties of ESSL, Arts, Humanities & Cultures and Leeds University Business School (LUBS) to organise and run professional development activity for fellow early career researchers. This could be a workshop focussed on careers or even setting up a group or network which aimed to promote professional development for early career researchers.
The deadline for applications is 14th June 2017, 5pm. We anticipate being able to fund activity at up to £1000 per event. Awards will be made on a competitive basis. The awards panel will pay particular attention to clearly defined themes, well-formed training plans and detailed budgeting. The panel will be seeking to give approval to development activity that engages with fellow early career research staff and also possibly PhD students in the “LEAP” faculties (ESSL, Arts, Humanities & Cultures and Leeds University Business School (LUBS)).
What should this development activity look like?
Development activity should offer participants opportunities to develop transferable skills (if you need some advice about how you might do this please contact Dr Jenny Rivas Perez, email@example.com.) Some examples would be:
- a conference or local seminar series with career and professional development themed topics.
- organising one-off development events
- setting up and running cross-disciplinary networks and groups
Further information can be found in the Guidance notes section of the application form (see link at the bottom of this page).
Aim of this Funding
The funding is provided in order to allow postdoctoral staff greater personal involvement in their professional development and to complement the training and development activity already provided by LEAP training and OD&PL (formerly SDDU). In giving applicants the opportunity to bid for funds we also seek to give them the opportunity to develop (and evidence for future employment applications) transferable skills such as writing funding applications, project management, budget management, team-working etc.
We expect the planned activity to involve at least 6 early career researchers/postdoctoral teaching staff (postdoctoral, postdoctoral contract teaching staff and research students) from Leeds. The activity may also involve academic staff (as invited speakers, perhaps) and early career research staff from other institutions. It is a requirement of funding that applications must be submitted jointly by at least two research/postdoctoral teaching staff from the “LEAP” faculties (ESSL, Arts, Humanities & Cultures and Leeds University Business School (LUBS).These research staff should not currently be registered for a PhD. The theme should be clearly defined, and an explicit transferable skills development dimension should be identified. The proposal must include firm details of how transferable skills will be developed within the timetable for your event or activity. Please contact Dr Jenny Rivas Perez firstname.lastname@example.org for advice on this aspect of your application before you submit the application.
